The Carte Blanche Project - The White Dress

Sublimation print on my dress.

1. Testing the prints at 20, 40 & 60 seconds to find the ideal temperature. Temperature used for the final pieces is 60 seconds - best colour.

60secs.- 40 secs.- 20 secs.

2. Heat pressing the sublimation print once, twice and a third time.

The more times you use the sumblimation print, the lighter the design becomes. This will allow me to get more contrast in the design by mixing and matching the pieces.

The Rock Pigeon Update

Once I prepared the frame of my stool, the next step was to upholster it.

The Materials
Top left: Calico
Bottom left: Rubberized hair/artificial horse hair
Top right: frame
Bottom Right: lintafelt

Method
1.I started by cutting out the shape which was to form the base.(wood/MDF)
2.I covered the surface area of the base with rubberized hair. (stapling it half way in to secure it from any movement)
3.Then I cut the lintafelt large enough to cover the sides too. (This will make it softer and avoid people getting pricked from the rubberized hair).
4. After I cut the Calico large enough to be stretched over the entire surface and secured at the back of the base.

5. I stapled a piece of hessian at the bottom to cover the wood.

6. I cut the cover out and designed it with the Laser cutter. (large enough to wrap itself around the whole base and be pulled neatly to the back)
7. The last step was to apply the fabric. I put the lintafelt under the top layer  and tucked it neatly to give me a nice smooth and soft finish. It was very tricky because the fabric was very stiff. I used a hammer to flatten corners.

The Rock Pigeon Colour Palette

Inspiration: Pigeons

Why?: The concept is to change peoples perceptions of something negative into a positive one.
For What?: The colour Palette will be used for my upcycled furniture.

The Rock Pigeon Palette

Tomorrow I am starting an Upholstery class, so, what I had to do was prepare the frame of  a stool I found in a skip. I have upcycled the frame by sanding it down and repainted it with 5 distinctive colours (3 shades of grey, pink and green) taken from the Rock Pigeon.

Step 1. Sourcing the material

Step 2: The inspiration for the Colour Palette -
The Rock pigeon

Step 3: Preparing the frame
- Sand blasting and Sanding down the Frame.
- Applying a primer

The Carte Blanche Project + Table Top Fun

The Carte Blanche Project is a group exhibition by Chelsea MA Textile students. Every participating student has been given a white dress and they need to upcycle/recycle the dress into something completely different. Showing different ways of reusing fabrics.

For this project I decided to take Table Top Fun from a different perspective. I would like to incorporate the fabric into furniture. I started by finding a table that needed to come back to life.

The first step was to strip the paint off the table by applying a paint remover and a using a knife to scrape it off(because that's all that I had). It was quite a slow processes but very satisfactory. The second step was to sand it down with a sander to bring it back to its natural state, so that I would be able to give it a new coat of paint. The third step was to cut the pieces to be placed on the top and bottom part of the table. This is where the Table Top Fun will be placed

The table: step 1, 2 & 3.

These are some ideas for the surfaces:

The surface is inspired by pixels. The fabric is most likely to be digitally printed but it might be hand dyed or screen printed. More experiments to come soon...

Table Top Fun Updates

In the past weeks I was working on a few experiments by changing the colour's and fonts for the Table Top Fun. Here are some results below:

Tables used for this project will all be upcycled.

Tables will have different inserts to encourage people to play, learn but most of all to have fun! People would be able to personalise their tables.

It would be suitable for all ages and I will be modifying the sizes + pieces according to the age groups.
